Background:
Long ago, before the first chapters began.
Thousands of years in the past there existed a kingdom on the moon known as the Silver Millennium Kingdom, a fairy-tale like palace with advanced technology and a light that maintained harmony through the solar system. It was ruled over the previous Queen Serenity, who was protected by her four guardians. Neptune however, as one of the outer Senshi was not among those found on the moon or in the palace. Her post was far from her home there, in Triton Castle. With Pluto guardians the doors of space-time, through the years Neptune had served as the kingdom's first line of defense from invasion. However, despite her watchful eye still, the enemy somehow managed to infiltrate Silver Millenia and destroy the kingdom. As the darkness spread the talisman which was entrusted to Neptune began to resonate in a way that it never had before. The Deep Aqua Mirror, along with the other two talismans reaching out to one another as they awoke the final Senshi, Sailor Saturn. With the soldier of death awoken, Neptune and the others could only watch from the ruins as Saturn's glaive fell destroying what remained and bringing destruction and death to all that remained.
(Act 27-38) Mugen Academy & Death Busters
Through time those who served as guardians of that kingdom though were reborn, and their powers would reawaken as they were needed. Neptune was reborn in Japan with the name Michiru Kaiou. A beautiful young woman with wit and wisdom who was a prodigy with a violin. As Michiru she grew, advancing her skill with the violin and enjoying things such as painting scenery of the sea and beach. She continued to be pulled towards the water, and at some point through an unknown catalyst her powers awakened along with Sailor Uranus. Sensing the danger and enemy that had managed to re-appear, Michiru and Haruka infiltrated the Mugen academy by becoming students. Michiru being an aspiring professional violinist became rather popular for her talent, where Haruka was known for talents behind the wheel of a car and for Judo. The two of them monitored the enemy, together, and promised that they would not fail to protect the world this time. That they would keep the future Neo-queen Serenity and the world safe. It was inevitable though, having been reborn in Japan and in dealing with the enemy, that they came into contact with Mamoru, Usagi, and the other Inner Senshi. The two of them attempted to warn the others of the danger of getting involved with the Mugen Academy, stating that if Usagi continued to take such risks it would take a toll on her body. However, when the others continued showing up Michiru changed methods slightly. Keeping her identity as Sailor Neptune a secret, Michiru did remain friendly towards the other, keeping watch over them and giving tickets to Mamoru so Usagi would be able to attend her show. They also continued their watch over Hotaru, the unwakened Sailor Saturn, who had become a subject of experimentation by the enemy. It's only after the concert when defeating the witch Mimete that both Neptune and Uranus reveal their identity. However, they still refuse to allow others to know anything more, keeping their goal and their motives a secret from the others. Stating that they never claimed to be allies just before incapacitating the others and vanishing.
Even after their identities are revealed and they are called enemies, both Haruka and Michiru continue to protect and save the other Senshi. Waiting and biding their time until the one who bore the third talisman awoke, waiting for Sailor Pluto and the Garnet Orb. It isn’t until that moment, when Pluto awakens that they reveal the truth of everything that they know. They share their information about Pharaoh 90 and the Death Busters, revealing that the enemy is from the Tau system and plans to invade the Earth and take it for themselves. As well as the role that the talismans that they carry play in summoning or defeating the Goddess of Destruction. Still despite revealing all of this, they continue to insist that they work on their own, that only the three of them have the power to defeat this enemy and that the Inner Senshi will only get in the way. But the power of the Death Busters had grown and when Haruka is ambushed by Cyprine, they are brainwashed into attacking the other Senshi; the dark desire to keep the other scouts from interfering driving them to attack their allies. And it is only when their talismans resonate with the holy grail and they surrender their power to Sailor Moon that the spell is able to be broken.
After being released by Sailor Moon, Michiru was surprised to see her Deep Aqua Mirror resonate with the Holy Grail, enabling Sailor Moon to become Super Sailor Moon. She admitted that her talisman had reacted in such a way only once; back when Silver Millennium was on the verge of annihilation at the hands of Queen Metaria. It had then resonated to awaken the last Sailor Senshi, Sailor Saturn. Agreeing with Sailor Uranus' plan to kill Hotaru to prevent the Senshi of Ruin and Rebirth from awakening a second time, she left to go the Hotaru's home. She was shocked to see Sailor Chibi Moon go in; just as Hotaru was being fully taken over by another female entity that she came to realize was not Sailor Saturn but someone else altogether. She was unable to save Chibiusa's Silver Crystal and spirit being taken by Mistress 9.
She left Usagi's disheartened team and went with Uranus and Pluto to prevent Mistress 9 from achieving her evil goals and the awakening of Sailor Saturn by destroying Hotaru. Noticing that the four Inner Guardians were in trouble, she used her magic mirror to emit a strong blast of seawater at Witches 5, releasing them from the sticky goo. She said that she had come to help, as she was also a Sailor Guardian. Her connection with the others had caused the Holy Grail to appear and for Sailor Moon to evolve into her much stronger Super form. Neptune then went with Uranus, Pluto and Super Sailor Moon to find Hotaru. She assured Super Sailor Moon that she, too, felt alone and insecure as she was always far away from the people of the Moon Kingdom, but simply seeing the forms of her dear queen and princess was the light that guided her forward. The elevator picked up speed and she was confronted by Souichi Tomoe, who said that his Diamon were hungry. While holding some off, she urged Super Sailor Moon to get her scepter. She saw Super Sailor Moon reluctantly destroy the vile being that had once been Hotaru's father. As Mugen Academy started to break apart, she was saved from the debris by Sailor Pluto using her Garnet Orb to create a triangular shield around them.
As Mistress 9 began to grow more powerful, Sailor Neptune ran towards her and used her mirror to enshroud Mugen in a dome-shaped barrier, vowing to defend the world that gave birth to her new queen. To maintain the shield, she was unable to help Sailor Moon stop Mistress 9 from absorbing the spirits of the Inner Guardians, but showed relief when they were returned by Hotaru's brave consciousness. Unfortunately, the shield was eventually broken by Pharaoh 90 and she fell. She was then glad to see Sailor Chibi Moon, safe and sound, attacking Mistress 9 directly. Neptune had lent her strength to the Holy Grail, but was astounded when an additional Holy Grail appeared before Sailor Chibi Moon, who used it to evolve into her own Super Sailor form. When the combined attacks of Super Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Chibi Moon, the Inner Guardians, and Tuxedo Mask all failed, she watched helplessly as their strength was sapped from each of them.
As Pharaoh 90 grew in both size and strength, she suddenly noticed the Deep Aqua Mirror glowing aqua-green. She watched as a purple glowing orb of light rose up, revealing the Guardian of Ruin herself. Sailor Saturn said how she was to swing down her Silence Glaive, Neptune immediately expressed her horror for the scythe of the Goddess of Death. However, she could do nothing as Sailor Saturn unleashed her strongest and most deadly attack yet-Death Reborn Revolution- and began obliterating all of traces of Pharaoh 90 and the world by swinging down her Silence Glaive on its sharp edge. Neptune could only watch as Saturn drew the enemy back into the Tau nebula, demanding for Pluto to shut the door; which would trap Saturn there as well as Pharaoh 90 neither ever being able to return.
But as the dust settled and the Senshi all took notice of the miracle unfolding before them as Usagi mended the buildings and healed the world ravaged by the brief destruction, Michiru noticed a child. Picking up the baby, she was able to recognize it as a reborn Hotaru and suggested that they take it in; that the Outer Senshi should raise her together as a family.
(Act 44-49)Family Life & Deadmoon
After the defeat of Pharaoh 90 and the rebirth of Hotaru, the mission for Michiru and the outer Senshi was changed. Their mission was now to watch over and raise the child that they had previously feared awakening. For six months the four of them lived in a dream-like state, Michiru being responsible for cooking and tending to Hotaru’s health. No longer able to transform, she began teaching Violin lessons to children while still maintaining her popularity as a professional musician. It is shown that they have adapted well to their new lives, though as Hotaru's powers begin to awaken once again they wonder how long it will be until they will have to return to their lives as Sailor Guardians. Feeling the disturbance and presence of a new threat, each becomes frustrated at not being able to transform; wondering if they had been cast out entirely. Their answer comes swiftly enough though as once more Hotaru awakens as Sailor Saturn, revealing that they no longer have to fight or live in solitude, that they have been reborn to fight and be by the side of the princess. Thanking them for raising her Hotaru takes them to the place where they are all to gather to aide the prince and princess.
Their arrival is what finally is able to reach through the curse and darkness that had begun to spread within Usagi and reach her. All of the Senshi reuniting and the power of the aqua mirror reaching out and calling to her as Neptune and the others arrived to save the Inner Senshi and confront the enemy. Neptune helps to hold the enemy off, but ultimately is only able to slow their plans and lend her power to Sailor Moon. It is through the combination of all of their powers, the powers of their castles, given to the holy grail that the enemy is able to be defeated. Their victory freed the golden and pink crystals, as the prince and princess finally awoke their full powers. And afterward Michiru and Haruka are able to return to their lives as high school students, the recapturing of a youthful life being a wonderful and joyful thing to Michiru.
The very joy that brings her to Empatheias under the protection of Daimonia.
Personality:
Ocean is more ancient than the mountains, and freighted with the memories and the dreams of Time. - H.P. Lovecraft
Michiru Kaiou, the reincarnated Sailor Neptune, is connected to the waters of the sea and ocean with a personality reflected in the depth of her personality and character. The person whom her fans know is but a surface reflection of the greater strength and determination that lies beneath it. The ebb and wane of traits like the tides of the ocean are demonstrated in the contradictory nature of her relationships and actions throughout the series. The dependence and annoyance with Haruka Tenoh, the fear of and then motherly devotion to Hotaru Tomoe, and in the way she serves the future Queen Serenity, all show the contradictory nature that lies beneath the surface. The elegant flow and balance between them a symphony adding to her grace, the music which fills her life cutting through and washing over it all. It is the notes from her violin that leave her whole and provide the clearest view into the deep waters of her heart.
On the surface, much like the undisturbed surface of a lake, Michiru appears calm and reflective. She holds herself with a reserved composure that makes her appear withdrawn and allusive. Seemingly versed in classical aristocratic behavior, she holds herself with a grace and poise that speaks to an upper-class education and lifestyle. Careful consideration and thought go into her appearance and into the way that she presents herself to others. This can be seen in her initial warning to Usagi, as well when she first bumps into Mamoru. In both cases, she was precise with the words that she chose, and her appearance dignified. When first meeting her, others are most often greeted with a pleasant smile and kind words; but one that remains distant but beautiful like the light of the stars or moon on the water.
Beneath the elegant surface lies the true depth and strength of Michiru Kaiou, the heart of a Sailor Guardian. The aspects of herself, which only those who truly get to know her allowed to see. The first being the depth of grief that she feels for her past failures as Sailor Neptune, the loss of the Moon Kingdom trapping her in the past. Early in the series, it is this single moment that motivates her, driving her to do anything necessary to prevent the destruction and death that occurred before. With her reincarnation and the awakening of her powers, this shared past is what draws her to Haruka Tenoh. The two of them are capable of consoling and saving one another from drowning in the grief of the light that was lost when Sailor Saturn was awoken. The guilt of it is what drives the two of them to try and warn off the other Senshi when it comes to dealing with Dead Moon. Becoming so pervasive that she is willing to go against the wishes of Usagi, the future Neo-queen Serenity, and vows to prevent disaster by killing Hotaru Tomoe before her powers as Sailor Saturn awaken. The grief of having to hide from them, in having to eliminate another Senshi, reflected in the distortion of her music as she used it to disable the others. Her connection to the past is only further complicated by the ability she has to see into the past lives of others with the aqua mirror, seeing the faces and light of the former King and Queen each time that she looks at Usagi and Mamoru. Despite its defining aspect, this grief does not entirely define her but rather serves as a reminder of what can happen should she not remain vigilant and strong.
It is a strength that she pulls from the bonds to those that she surrounds herself with, the closest and most intimate of those being with Haruka Tenoh. As Senshi, Neptune and Uranus are entrusted with two of the three talismans required to awaken the Senshi of destruction, Sailor Saturn. Separate from the others, they were responsible for protecting the moon kingdom from any external threat, any enemy that would come from outside the Solar System such as the Pharaoh 90. The two of them awakened to their powers independently from the others and were drawn to each other. Their responsibility binding them, as time found them relying on one another. Haruka Tenoh became a pillar of strength for Michiru, becoming the person who could see and knew everything about her. It is in Haruka’s arms that Michiru feels the safest and most at ease, her expression softening with each embrace. Despite the depth of their bond and the trust she has in Haruka, Michiru often becomes annoyed with how aloof and flirtatious Haruka can be with other women; wishing that the other wouldn’t play around as much when it came to such. At the same time, she seems to take offense when Haruka becomes overprotective and possessive, seeming to be slightly offended with a fan’s gift or admiration is interrupted by Haruka. No matter what they face, there is no doubt in the strength of their bond, and they will always stand together, even if Michiru is ready to shout her head off.
It is her relationship with Haruka that acted as the core of her resolve, but it is further strengthened with the rebirth and rearing of Hotaru Tomoe that solidifies it. Prior to Hotaru’s defeat of Pharaoh 90, Michiru had feared the awakening of Sailor Saturn and believed the world was best without her. Neptune had vowed to destroy Hotaru, who should have died years previously, to protect everyone from the destruction she could bring. However, when Hotaru is reborn as an infant Michiru gladly accepts the responsibility of raising the child. She is the one who points out that Hotaru is all alone and that they should be the ones to care for her. The grief of the past becomes washed away with the joy and happiness that she feels raising Hotaru as her daughter, and the family life that she is able to share with the Outer Senshi. In contrast to the duties of Neptune, Michiru joyfully took to domestic responsibility. Looking after Hotaru became her new mission, one that she was happy to take on, as seen in the way that she dotes on Hotaru. And even celebrates the six-month anniversary from the day they all became a family. The four of them being together as one has become the joy the allows her to stand up to the past, and stand against any enemy.
And it is that sense of duty to protect that lies beneath it all. A mission that was given to Neptune by Queen Serenity, which she upholds even in her new life. With Usagi, Michiru’s relationship started off questionable. Her devotion to the princess and doing what was necessary no matter what drove Michiru from including the others in their plans. And yet Michiru still reached out to her, trying to warn and protect her despite the other Senshi seeing her as an enemy; inviting Mamoru in hopes Usagi would be his date to the show. Recognizing that Usagi is not the same the previous Queen Serenity, Michiru still respects her and holds her in high regard. However, she realizes at the same time that she is young and has very much to learn, and so she watches over her and is protective of the princess. A protectiveness that is passed on to Chibiusa as well.
Each person in her life if a single part of the piece of the score that composes who Michiru is, the one common thread through it all being her music. Her music and the violin that she plays, Marine Cathédrale, are the true reflection of who she is and what she feels. This is one of the reasons that it remains so captivating and draws others in, why Usagi is unable to help but follow it. Deep rich sounds of the wood and the strings, the elegance of the notes, are her heart and soul given form and manifestation. Music is the way that Michiru relates to the world, and it is how she connects and shares what is in her heart with anyone that listens. Each measure flowing gracefully, effortlessly, like the tides of the ocean drawing one out into the depths of its waters.

As well as holding onto the warmth of the light of the Moon Kingdom, seeing the growth of Usagi into Neo-queen serenity. She is often smiling while looking to the future, but just as often reflects upon the past as well.
